To drill a hole in tile, identify the material, select a compatible tile bit, secure a guide, and drill without hammer action using the bit manufacturer’s speed and cooling instructions. Bosch’s EXPERT HEX-9 Hard Ceramic FAQ, for example, specifies rotary-only operation and speeds below 500 rpm for that particular bit. The correct settings depend on the tool, not simply on the word “tile.”
A successful installation also needs suitable support behind the surface. A neat hole alone cannot make a towel rail secure or keep a shower penetration watertight.
Tile drilling creates an opening through a finished facing for fasteners, pipes, or fittings. It is common because bathroom and kitchen accessories often need mounting after the tilework is complete.
Material identification matters. The Tile Council of North America’s Porcelain vs. Non-Porcelain FAQ defines porcelain by water absorption of 0.5% or less, measured under ASTM C373. These methods reduce risk; they do not guarantee that every tile can be drilled without cracking.
Typical applications include towel rails, mirror brackets, cabinet fittings, and pipe openings. For a kitchen rail, plan both the fixing positions and the support behind the backsplash before marking the tile.
Use qualified installers for shower enclosures, grab bars, heavy shelves, and moisture-sensitive assemblies. TCNA’s Showers FAQ makes clear that waterproofing and backing materials must form a compatible system. A drilled penetration needs the membrane manufacturer’s approved detail.
Do not casually drill shower curbs, floors with concealed heating, or structural concrete. Unknown wiring, plumbing, waterproofing, or reinforcement requires professional assessment. Stop if tiles move, existing cracks are spreading, or the wall’s construction is uncertain.
Check drawings and use appropriate detection equipment for concealed services; a detector alone cannot prove a drilling location is clear. Have uncertain electrical or plumbing routes assessed professionally.
Prepare a variable-speed drill, compatible bit, guide, level, depth stop, eye protection, and suitable dust control. Follow the applicable silica-control requirements and respiratory-protection assessment; a household vacuum is not an adequate substitute for suitable extraction.
For ordinary glazed ceramic, use a bit explicitly rated for ceramic tile. For porcelain, a porcelain-rated diamond bit is a dependable option. Some specialized carbide bits also cover hard ceramics; verify the exact approval instead of assuming all carbide products are equivalent.
Check cutting depth against the actual tile thickness. For example, Bosch limits its referenced Hard Ceramic bit to tiles up to 10 mm thick. Thicker coverings need a different specification.

Use the fitting’s template and verify spacing with a level. Painter’s tape provides a visible marking surface; a compatible drilling guide gives more reliable control over a hollow diamond cutter.
Avoid striking a center punch into the glaze. When drilling an uninstalled tile, support it fully on a suitable sacrificial backing. Practice on a spare piece when possible.
Disable hammer action. Use the cutter’s prescribed starting technique and steady, controlled pressure.

Supply water only as required by the wet-cutting system, keeping the drill body and electrical connections dry. Dry-rated bits require their specified cooling technique and dust controls. Stop if cutting stalls, heat becomes excessive, or the tool behaves abnormally.

Ease pressure as the cutter breaks through. Stop before advancing blindly into the wall; change to a substrate-appropriate bit where necessary, as RUBI’s drilling guidance recommends.
The fixing manufacturer determines hole diameter, embedment, backing requirements, and tightening limits. Avoid expansion pressure within the tile itself. In wet areas, have the penetration sealed using the waterproofing system’s approved method. Decorative cover plates do not replace waterproofing.
Align brackets with cabinet edges and other fixtures. Small cover plates leave little room to conceal misplaced holes, so approve the complete hardware template before drilling.
Center fittings deliberately within the tile layout. On beveled or textured faces, check that the bracket sits securely without rocking or requiring excessive tightening.

TCNA cautions that low absorption does not automatically establish frost resistance. Exterior specifications must cover the complete installation, not just the tile body.

The Bosch figures are manufacturer examples dependent on material and technique, not guarantees. Adhesive mounting can be preferable for a lightweight hook, but never substitute an unrated adhesive fitting for a safety grab bar or heavy enclosure.
