Tile grout cracks when movement exceeds its capacity, when it shrinks during curing, or when installation leaves weak, incompletely filled joints. The Tile Council of North America (TCNA), in “Cracked/Loose Grout,” identifies substrate deflection, inadequate packing, excess mixing liquid, and improper handling after hydration begins as common causes.
The location and timing matter. A split in a shower corner needs a different response from powdery new grout or cracks surrounding a loose kitchen tile. Replacing grout before identifying the cause can leave the same problem waiting underneath.
Grout fills the joints between tiles. Setting mortar bonds tiles to their substrate; flexible sealant accommodates movement at designated joints. These materials have different responsibilities.
Cement grout remains a practical option because it offers familiar installation methods, numerous colors, and economical material costs. Sanded formulations contain aggregate; unsanded formulations suit narrower joints within their stated limits.
Product specifications matter more than category names. MAPEI’s Keracolor S, for example, permits joints from 1/8 to 5/8 inch, while Ultracolor Plus FA permits 1/16 to 3/4 inch. Neither range means the grout can replace a movement joint.
A flexible subfloor, inadequately supported tile, or moving substrate can stress the grout. TCNA references an L/360 deflection criterion when assessing ceramic tile floor framing under expected loading. This expresses allowable bending relative to span; it is not a homeowner test or a universal specification for natural stone.
Repeated cracking around tiles that shift underfoot deserves professional investigation. Ask the installer to examine the complete assembly, including framing, underlayment, mortar coverage, and movement accommodation.

CUSTOM Building Products warns that excess mixing water or adding water to stiffening grout can produce soft, powdery material. Its guidance also identifies incomplete joint filling and overly rapid moisture loss in hot weather as installation problems.
A surface that looks filled may conceal voids. Likewise, washing too aggressively can leave shallow joints. Follow the selected product’s mixing, cleaning, temperature, and curing instructions rather than transferring a method from another grout.
MAPEI warns that Keracolor U in joints wider than 1/8 inch can develop hairline cracks and shrink below the tile surface. Conversely, conventional coarse sanded grout may not pack properly into very narrow joints.
Modern fine-aggregate products change this familiar sanded-versus-unsanded rule. Check the actual approved width range.
Corners, perimeters, and other designated movement joints must accommodate changes in the assembly. NTCA’s TileLetter explanation of TCNA detail EJ171 identifies interior inside corners and restraining perimeters as movement-joint locations.
Rigid grout across these locations can split repeatedly. More expensive grout does not remove the need for correctly designed flexible joints.

Photograph the pattern and note when it appeared. Expanding cracks, loose tiles, or leakage justify assessment before cosmetic repair.
Fewer repeat repairs. Addressing the deflection identified in TCNA’s troubleshooting guidance tackles the stress responsible for recurring damage.
Better movement accommodation. LATICRETE lists LATASIL silicone as ASTM C920 Class 25, with 25% extension and compression capacity. That measured flexibility serves a different purpose from grout strength.
More appropriate maintenance. MAPEI recommends sealing porous Keracolor S, while Ultracolor Plus FA typically does not require sealer. Identifying the product prevents unnecessary treatments and sets realistic care expectations.
For kitchen floors and backsplashes, choose a grout approved for the joint dimensions, tile finish, and cleaning demands. Stain resistance may justify an upgrade where cooking splashes are frequent.
In showers, distinguish the grouted tile field from flexible corner joints and the waterproofing system underneath. Schluter’s shower guidance explains that tile and grout do not create a waterproof assembly by themselves. Regrouting cannot repair a failed membrane or drain connection.
For patios, pools, and heated floors, verify the complete system’s approval for temperature changes, exterior exposure, freezing conditions, or immersion. An interior grout’s suitability should not be assumed outdoors.
When considering mosaic tile options, check individual tile spacing and sheet alignment. Numerous small joints make packing, cleanup, and consistent color especially important.

Choose grout close to the tile’s dominant tone when you want the surface to read continuously. Warm gray beside limestone-look porcelain or soft ivory beside cream tile can reduce the visual prominence of the grid.
Keep the specified joint width; a quieter appearance does not require tiles to touch.
Contrasting grout emphasizes the outline of subway, hexagon, and herringbone layouts. It also makes inconsistent spacing easier to notice.

For polished marble or delicate glass, compatibility takes priority over color. MAPEI recommends sample testing with fine-aggregate grout on these surfaces.
A coordinated sealant can make necessary corner joints less conspicuous without replacing their flexible function.
Tile hardness and slip ratings do not measure grout’s resistance to assembly movement. Floor movement joints also need sealants or profiles approved for the expected traffic.

Epoxy can be the better choice for stain resistance; unsanded grout may better suit an approved narrow joint. Silicone is a complementary movement-joint material, not a substitute across an entire tiled floor.
First, correct the cause. Regrouting a moving tile or leaking assembly leaves the underlying defect unresolved.
For suitable cement-grout repairs, MAPEI’s Keracolor S guidance calls for removing at least two-thirds of the existing joint depth before replacement. A thin layer smeared over damaged grout is not an equivalent repair.
Have a qualified installer handle removal near waterproofing, heating elements, or delicate tile edges. The repair should provide adequate depth, clean bonding surfaces, compatible grout, and the specified curing conditions.
For a failed movement joint, the professional should restore the appropriate sealant or profile detail rather than repeatedly filling it with grout.

Use cleaners approved for both grout and tile. The Natural Stone Institute recommends neutral cleaners for stone and warns that vinegar, lemon, and other acids can etch calcium-carbonate-based materials such as marble.
Sealer requirements are product-specific. MAPEI specifies waiting at least 48 hours before sealing Keracolor S; this is a sealing interval, not a universal rule for reopening showers.
Inspect joints during routine cleaning and address loose sections promptly. There is no defensible universal grout-replacement age: installation quality, exposure, movement, and cleaning conditions determine performance.

Avoid diagnosing every crack as building settlement, buying stronger grout before checking tile support, filling movement joints rigidly, and covering damaged cement grout with a shallow patch.

A new color can refresh sound grout. It cannot correct a joint that is physically failing.
