View full detailsA Guide to Pebble Tile for Showers
Pebble tile captures the look and feel of a natural riverbed - smooth, rounded stones in organic shapes and colors arranged on mesh-backed sheets. Walking on pebble tile feels like stepping on a natural stone path, making it one of the most tactile and experiential tile options available.
Types of Pebble Tile
Natural river stone pebble tile uses real stones that have been tumbled and sorted by size and color, then mounted on mesh backing. Sliced pebble tile (also called flat pebble tile) uses stones that have been cut to create a flat walking surface - more comfortable underfoot while retaining the pebble aesthetic. Porcelain pebble tile mimics the look of natural pebbles with the consistency and low maintenance of porcelain.
Best Applications
Shower floors are the most popular application for pebble tile. The rounded stones provide excellent traction when wet, and the organic texture creates a spa-like shower experience. Bathroom floors - especially in master baths with a natural or spa aesthetic - benefit from pebble tile's unique texture. Outdoor showers, pool surrounds, and garden pathways are natural fits. Accent borders alongside floor tile add organic contrast.
Colors and Stones
Pebble tile comes in a wide range of natural tones. White and cream pebbles (Timor White, White Bali) create a bright, beach-inspired look. Gray pebbles suit modern and minimalist designs. Brown and tan pebbles (Java Tan, Bali Turtle) deliver warm, earthy tones. Black pebbles create a dramatic, moody surface. Mixed-color blends offer the most natural, river-like appearance.
Installation Considerations
Pebble tile requires more grout than flat mosaic tile due to the irregular spaces between stones. Use unsanded grout and work it thoroughly into all gaps. Sealing natural stone pebble tile before and after grouting is essential - this prevents the stone from absorbing grout pigment. The irregular surface means pebble tile takes longer to grout and clean than flat tile. For the most comfortable walking surface, choose sliced (flat) pebble tile over round pebble tile on floors.
Is pebble tile comfortable to stand on in a shower?
Sliced (flat) pebble tile is comfortable for most people and is the most popular shower floor option. Traditional round pebble tile creates a more pronounced massage-like texture that some find uncomfortable for extended standing. If comfort is a priority, choose sliced pebble tile or a pebble tile with smaller, more uniform stones. Wearing shower shoes is another option with round pebble tile.
How do you clean pebble tile in a shower?
Clean pebble tile with a soft brush and a pH-neutral stone cleaner. The textured surface collects more soap and shampoo residue than flat tile, so weekly scrubbing is recommended. Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage natural stone. Reseal natural stone pebble tile periodically (every 6-12 months in shower use) to maintain stain resistance. Epoxy grout makes maintenance easier than cement grout.
Can pebble tile be used outside?
Yes, pebble tile is a popular outdoor option. Natural stone pebbles handle weather well, but ensure the stones and grout can withstand freeze-thaw cycles if you live in a cold climate. Use flexible, exterior-rated thinset and grout. Pebble tile works well on outdoor shower floors, pool surrounds, garden paths, and patio accent areas. Ensure proper drainage underneath the installation.
Does pebble tile need to be sealed?
Natural stone pebble tile must be sealed. Apply a penetrating stone sealer before grouting to prevent the stone from absorbing grout pigment, then seal again after grouting. Reseal periodically based on use - shower floors need resealing every 6-12 months, while walls and low-traffic areas need it less often. Porcelain pebble tile does not require sealing.
