View full detailsChoosing the Right Shower Floor Tile
Shower floor tile has different requirements than wall tile. It must provide grip when wet, conform to the slope of the shower pan, and drain properly. The format and texture of the tile matter as much as the material.
Why Smaller Tiles Work Best on Shower Floors
Small-format tiles - typically 2×2 or smaller - follow the contour of a sloped shower pan much better than large tiles. They also create more grout lines, which adds grip underfoot. Mosaic tile, penny tile, and hexagon tile in 1-inch or 2-inch sizes are the most common shower floor formats.
Shower Floor Tile by Material
Porcelain mosaic tile is the top choice for shower floors - it absorbs almost no water, cleans easily, and comes in dozens of colors and patterns. Natural stone mosaic tile including marble and pebble stone brings an organic, spa-like texture. Glass mosaic tile can work on shower floors if it has a textured or matte finish for grip.
Shower Floor Tile Styles
Pebble tile is the most popular shower floor style for its natural look and massage-like texture. Hexagonal mosaics provide a geometric, modern feel. Classic square mosaics in white or gray match nearly any shower wall tile. For a contrasting floor, pair light walls with a darker mosaic floor to define the shower space.
Slip Resistance and Safety
Look for tiles with a textured, matte, or honed finish for shower floors. Polished tile is too slippery for shower floor use. The DCOF (Dynamic Coefficient of Friction) rating should be 0.42 or higher for wet areas. All shower floor tiles in our collection meet this threshold.
What is the best tile for a shower floor?
Small-format porcelain mosaic tile is the best option for shower floors. 2×2 or 1×1 mosaics conform to the shower pan slope, and the additional grout lines provide traction. Pebble tile is another excellent choice for its natural grip and spa-like appearance.
Can you use large tiles on a shower floor?
Large tiles are generally not recommended for standard shower floors. The shower pan needs to slope toward the drain, and large tiles cannot follow this contour properly - they can create puddles or uneven surfaces. Linear drains are an exception, as they allow a single-direction slope that can work with larger tiles.
How do I keep shower floor tile from being slippery?
Choose tiles with a matte, textured, or honed finish rather than polished. Use smaller tile formats to increase grout coverage, which adds traction. Ensure the tile has a DCOF rating of 0.42 or higher. Regular cleaning prevents soap scum buildup that can make any tile slippery.
What size tile is best for a shower floor?
1×1 inch and 2×2 inch mosaic tiles are the ideal sizes for shower floors. These small formats can follow the slope of a shower pan toward the drain without lippage. Mesh-backed mosaic sheets make installation faster while maintaining proper spacing.
