Rectangular Tile for Every Space
Rectangular tile is the foundation of most tile installations. Its elongated shape offers design flexibility that square and specialty shapes cannot match, allowing for dozens of layout patterns and visual effects.
Popular Sizes
Common rectangle tile sizes include 3x6 (subway), 4x12, 4x16, 6x24, 12x24, and 24x48. Smaller rectangles are popular for backsplashes and walls. Mid-size formats like 12x24 are the most common floor tile size. Large-format rectangles (24x48 and beyond) create a seamless, modern look with minimal grout lines.
Layout Patterns
The same rectangular tile can look dramatically different depending on layout. Running bond (offset) is the most common pattern. Stacked bond creates a clean, modern grid. Herringbone and chevron patterns add movement and visual interest. Vertical installation elongates wall height, while horizontal orientation widens a space. Brick-lay with a 1/3 offset offers a more traditional look.
Materials
Porcelain rectangles dominate the floor tile market thanks to superior durability and vast style options including wood-look, marble-look, and stone-look finishes. Ceramic rectangles are ideal for walls and lighter-duty applications. Natural stone rectangles - in marble, travertine, and limestone - offer one-of-a-kind beauty.
What is the most popular rectangular tile size?
The 12x24 inch format is the most popular rectangular tile size for floors. It works in rooms of all sizes, minimizes grout lines, and is available in the widest range of styles. For walls and backsplashes, 3x6 and 4x12 subway formats remain the top choices.
Should rectangular tile be laid horizontally or vertically?
Both orientations work well - it depends on the effect you want. Horizontal installation is standard for floors and makes spaces appear wider. Vertical installation on walls draws the eye upward and makes ceilings feel higher. In showers, vertical stacking is a popular modern trend.
What layout pattern is best for rectangular tile?
Running bond (50% offset) is the most popular and forgiving layout. For a contemporary look, try a stacked bond or 1/3 offset pattern. Herringbone creates the most visual interest but requires more material and careful installation. Choose based on your style preference and the scale of the space.
