View full detailsWhy Choose Outdoor Porcelain Tile for Patios
Outdoor porcelain tile combines the design flexibility of indoor tile with the durability needed for exterior applications. With water absorption below 0.5%, outdoor porcelain resists freeze-thaw cycles, chemical exposure, UV fading, and heavy foot traffic - making it the most versatile exterior tile material available.
Where to Use Outdoor Porcelain Tile
Outdoor porcelain tile is ideal for patio surfaces, pool surrounds, balconies, rooftop terraces, driveways, and outdoor kitchens. It transitions seamlessly from indoor to outdoor spaces when you carry the same tile through sliding doors. This indoor-outdoor continuity is one of the biggest trends in home design.
Outdoor Porcelain vs. Natural Stone
Natural stone pavers like travertine and limestone have been the traditional outdoor choice. Outdoor porcelain tile offers a lower-maintenance alternative that never needs sealing, won't stain from food or pool chemicals, and won't fade in sunlight. It's also available in stone look, wood look, and cement look finishes that replicate natural materials convincingly.
Outdoor Porcelain Tile Styles
Stone look porcelain replicates travertine, slate, and limestone without the sealing requirements. Wood look porcelain provides the aesthetic of timber decking without rotting, warping, or splinters. Cement look porcelain suits modern and industrial outdoor spaces. Large format outdoor porcelain creates a sleek patio surface with fewer joints.
Installation Options
Outdoor porcelain tile can be installed over a concrete slab with exterior-rated thinset, sand-set over a compacted gravel base, or placed on adjustable pedestal systems for elevated decks and rooftop terraces. The installation method depends on the substrate and application. Porcelain pavers (typically 20mm thick) are designed specifically for sand-set and pedestal installations.
Can porcelain tile be used outdoors?
Yes, as long as it is rated for exterior use. Outdoor porcelain tile must have a water absorption rate below 0.5% to resist freeze-thaw cycles. It should also have a textured or structured surface for slip resistance. All porcelain tile in our outdoor collection meets these specifications.
Does outdoor porcelain tile need to be sealed?
No. Porcelain tile does not need sealing for outdoor use. Its near-zero porosity means it won't absorb water, stains, or chemicals. This is one of porcelain's biggest advantages over natural stone, which typically requires annual sealing outdoors.
Is outdoor porcelain tile slippery when wet?
Outdoor-rated porcelain tile has a textured or structured surface specifically designed for wet traction. Look for tiles with an R10 or R11 anti-slip rating. The porcelain tile in our outdoor collection is selected for adequate slip resistance when wet.
