View full detailsChoosing Natural Stone Tile for Bathrooms
Natural stone tile has been the premier flooring and wall covering material for thousands of years. Each stone type offers distinct characteristics in terms of appearance, durability, and maintenance requirements. Understanding these differences helps you select the right stone for your specific application and lifestyle.
Types of Natural Stone Tile
Marble is the classic luxury stone - known for dramatic veining and a luminous quality. Travertine offers warm earth tones and a rustic character, excelling both indoors and outdoors. Slate is one of the hardest natural stones, with a textured cleft surface and excellent durability. Limestone provides understated elegance with soft, muted tones. Granite is the most durable option, resistant to scratching and acid etching. Quartzite combines marble's beauty with granite's strength. Basalt and soapstone offer specialized properties for specific applications.
Natural Stone by Application
For floors, granite, slate, and quartzite offer the best durability for high-traffic areas. Marble and travertine excel in formal living spaces and bathrooms. For showers, choose honed finishes with proper sealing. For backsplashes, any stone type works depending on your design style. For outdoor use, travertine, granite, basalt, and slate perform best against weather and UV exposure. Natural stone mosaics add artful detail to any application.
Natural Stone vs. Porcelain
Natural stone provides unique beauty, warmth, and character that porcelain cannot fully replicate. Each tile has natural variation - no two are identical. The tradeoff is that most natural stones require sealing and more careful maintenance than porcelain tile. For a low-maintenance alternative, stone look porcelain tile mimics natural stone patterns. Many designers combine both - natural stone for focal areas and porcelain for high-traffic zones.
General Care Guidelines
All natural stone tile should be sealed upon installation with a penetrating stone sealer. Resealing frequency varies by stone type - marble and limestone every 1-2 years, granite every 2-3 years. Use pH-neutral, stone-safe cleaners for all stone types. Avoid acidic cleaners on marble, limestone, travertine, and onyx. Regular sweeping prevents abrasive grit from wearing the surface.
What is the most durable natural stone tile?
Granite and quartzite are the most durable natural stone tiles. Both rank 6-7+ on the Mohs hardness scale, making them highly resistant to scratching, chipping, and wear. Slate is also very durable. Marble, limestone, and travertine are softer and better suited for residential rather than high-traffic commercial applications.
What types of natural stone are used for tile?
The main types include marble (luxury veined stone), travertine (warm earth-toned limestone), slate (hard, layered stone with cleft texture), limestone (soft sedimentary stone), granite (extremely hard igneous stone), quartzite (metamorphic stone with marble-like looks), basalt (dense volcanic stone), onyx (translucent banded stone), sandstone (warm grained stone), and soapstone (smooth, heat-resistant stone).
Does natural stone tile need to be sealed?
Yes, virtually all natural stone tile requires sealing to protect against moisture absorption and staining. The exception is soapstone, which is naturally non-porous enough to skip sealing. Apply a penetrating stone sealer after installation and reseal periodically - the frequency depends on the stone type and the amount of traffic or moisture exposure.
Is natural stone tile more expensive than porcelain?
Natural stone generally costs more than standard porcelain tile, though there's significant overlap in pricing. Basic travertine or limestone can be comparable to mid-range porcelain, while premium marbles and quartzites cost considerably more. Factor in sealing products and slightly higher installation costs for natural stone. The unique beauty and character of natural stone often justify the investment for homeowners seeking an authentic, one-of-a-kind look.
