The Complete Guide to Mosaic Tile for Showers
Mosaic tile is any tile with an individual piece surface area of less than approximately 6 square inches, typically mounted on mesh-backed sheets for efficient installation. Mosaics have been used in architecture and art for thousands of years - from ancient Roman baths to modern spa bathrooms.
Mosaic Tile Materials
Glass mosaic tile offers brilliant color, translucency, and a luminous quality that reflects light beautifully. Marble mosaic tile - including white marble varieties like Carrara and Thassos - delivers natural elegance. Porcelain mosaics offer superior durability and water resistance for floors and wet areas. Natural stone mosaics in travertine, limestone, and slate add organic texture. Pebble tile brings a river stone look to shower floors and outdoor spaces.
Popular Mosaic Shapes
Hexagon mosaics deliver a honeycomb pattern that works in both vintage and modern designs. Herringbone mosaics create a V-pattern without the complexity of cutting individual tiles. Penny round mosaics add classic charm and excellent shower floor traction. Diamond mosaics create a dynamic angular pattern. Basketweave, arabesque, and fish scale patterns offer additional design options.
Best Applications
Kitchen backsplashes are the most popular application for mosaic tile - the smaller scale adds detail and the sheets simplify installation on wall surfaces. Shower floors are another natural fit - small mosaic tiles conform to the slope for drainage and provide grip. Bathroom accent walls, shower niches, tub surrounds, and pool waterlines are also common uses.
Mosaic Tile by Color
Our mosaics are available in every color family. White mosaics are timeless and versatile. Blue mosaics suit coastal and pool applications. Black mosaics add drama and sophistication. Gray mosaics offer a modern neutral. Brown mosaics deliver warmth and earthiness. Mixed-color sheets combine complementary tones for visual depth.
Installation Tips
Mosaic sheets install faster than individual tiles but still require care. Use white thinset for glass and light-colored mosaics - gray thinset can show through translucent tiles. Apply thinset to the wall and press sheets firmly, adjusting spacing between sheets to match the spacing within. For shower floors, use epoxy grout for maximum water resistance. Cut sheets with scissors and trim individual tiles with a wet saw or nippers.
What is the best mosaic tile for a backsplash?
Glass mosaic tile is the most popular backsplash choice - it reflects light, is easy to clean, and comes in an enormous range of colors. Marble mosaics add natural elegance. Porcelain mosaics offer the widest style range. The best choice depends on your design style, budget, and how much maintenance you're willing to do (glass and porcelain are lowest-maintenance).
Can mosaic tile be used on floors?
Yes, but choose the right material. Porcelain and natural stone mosaics are best for floors due to their durability. Glass mosaics are generally too fragile for floor use except in light-traffic areas. Small mosaics are ideal for shower floors. For larger floor areas, ensure the tile is rated for floor use and has adequate slip resistance.
How do you grout mosaic tile?
Use unsanded grout for mosaic joints narrower than 1/8" and sanded grout for wider joints. Epoxy grout is ideal for wet areas and glass mosaics - it won't stain or crack. Apply grout at a diagonal to the tile pattern, pressing firmly into joints. Clean excess grout promptly with a damp sponge. Work in small sections to prevent grout from drying before you can clean it.
What size mosaic tile is standard?
The most common mosaic tile sizes are 1x1, 2x2, and 1x2 inches. Penny rounds are typically 3/4" to 1" diameter. Hexagon mosaics range from 1" to 2" across. Mosaic tiles come pre-mounted on 12x12 or 12x13 inch mesh-backed sheets. Some mosaics use larger individual pieces (up to 3x6) in patterned arrangements on sheets.
