Some glossy products are approved for dry interior floors.
They require greater caution in bathrooms, entries and other areas where water or contaminants may be present.
Does a PEI rating measure tile strength?
Not completely.
PEI classification addresses the abrasion resistance of a glazed surface.
It does not measure slip resistance, water absorption or every aspect of structural performance.
Does tile make a shower waterproof?
No.
Tile and grout create a durable finish, but the shower depends on the underlying waterproofing, drainage and correctly detailed penetrations.
Is smaller tile better for shower floors?
Often, yes.
Smaller pieces can follow the drainage slope more easily, and the additional grout joints may contribute texture underfoot.
The product must still be approved for wet floor use.
How much mortar coverage does tile need?
Technical guidance generally calls for at least 80% contact in dry interior areas and at least 95% in wet or exterior applications, with full mortar support around the edges.
