Choose durable tile by matching its tested performance to the room: abrasion resistance for traffic, water absorption for moisture exposure, suitable traction for wet conditions, and an installation system that supports the tile properly. Porcelain is a strong starting point because its water absorption must be 0.5% or less under ASTM C373, according to the Tile Council of North America’s Porcelain Certification guidance. That classification alone does not establish suitability for every floor.
A busy kitchen, an upstairs bathroom, and a freezing terrace place different demands on the same attractive surface. Start with those demands before choosing its color.
Durability means retaining useful performance and an acceptable appearance under the expected conditions. For tile, that includes resisting surface wear, staining, moisture damage, and cracking within the installed assembly.
Porcelain belongs to the ceramic family. TCNA distinguishes it from non-porcelain ceramic through water absorption: porcelain absorbs no more than 0.5%, while non-porcelain absorbs more. Bathrooms and showers: obtain approval for the exact location, particularly the shower floor. Under ANSI A326.3, Interior Wet classification can use wet DCOF of at least 0.42 or manufacturer declaration. TCNA cautions that DCOF alone cannot predict slipping; drainage, contaminants, maintenance, and users also matter.
Patios and freezing climates: request exterior approval and freeze-thaw documentation, such as ASTM C1026 results. TCNA’s Frost Resistance FAQ explains that trapped water in joints or mortar voids can damage an otherwise frost-resistant installation.
Commercial premises: identify pedestrian traffic, rolling equipment, and contamination separately. A restaurant kitchen may require the Oils/Greases use classification, while a retail entrance has different demands.
Avoid wall-only products on floors, unapproved polished surfaces in wet walking areas, and ordinary interior tile assemblies over unstable substrates. Structural or moisture problems need professional assessment before material selection.
Pair wood-look porcelain with oak cabinetry, linen, and warm neutral grout. Review several pieces together to judge print repetition. For a convincing result, follow the manufacturer’s permitted layout and offset rather than assuming every plank suits a half-offset pattern.
Consider matte concrete-look or limestone-look tile with restrained color variation. Larger units reduce the number of grout joints across a given area, but their scale makes substrate preparation and edge alignment especially important. Roca’s SLATES technical sheet demonstrates that a conventional porcelain product can be 9 mm thick; size and thickness should be checked independently.
Choose marble or travertine when natural variation and patina are part of the brief. The Natural Stone Institute explains that calcium-carbonate-rich stone reacts with acids. In a frequently used kitchen, choose a stone-look porcelain if preserving the original finish with simpler care matters more than geological uniqueness.

Ceramic can be the better purchase for an approved low-demand room. Granite, marble, or travertine can justify greater care when their natural character is central to the design.

For natural stone, the Natural Stone Institute recommends neutral cleaning and warns against acidic products on calcareous surfaces. It also states that some stones need no sealer and that sealing improves stain resistance without making stone stain-proof. Resealing frequency should follow the supplier and sealer manufacturer, not a universal annual rule.
Plan for decades of service while monitoring grout, sealant joints, and local damage. TCNA identifies substrate movement as a cause of reflective cracking and explains that sun-exposed areas can require closer movement-joint spacing. These assembly details help determine whether the selected tile achieves its potential lifespan.

Paying more is sensible when it secures the necessary finish, documented performance, or installation quality. Paying for a higher abrasion class in a quiet room may add little practical value.
